May 2010 seems like so long ago but we just have to fill everyone in on RU TRDV’s participation in the 2010 American Society for Training and Development’s International Conference and Exposition (ASTD ICE) held in Chicago! Leaders from ASTD worked with volunteers from the Chicagoland Chapter of ASTD (CCASTD) as well as professionals around the world to create an event that provided a seemingly endless array of networking and best practice sharing opportunities for anyone who attend. This year was the first ASTD ICE to feature a “Student Day” where local university students in training and performance programs could attend an especially designed program free of charge. Many RU TRDV students took advantage of this opportunity and we were happy to see our programs so smartly represented to the training world!

RU TRDV took advantage of an ASTD ICE event in our own back yard by staffing an information booth in the Expo area. Current students, alumni, and faculty members were present at the booth to discuss our programs and best practices with thousands of attendees from all over the globe. We were happy to see so many members of the RU TRDV community stop by, say hello, and offer insight to Expo attendees who were interested in learning more about the RU TRDV experience.

In addition to the booth in the Expo area, RU TRDV lead a panel discussion titled, “University/Professional Organization Partnerships: A competitive advantage” on Monday, May 18, 2010. Panelists included Tara Hawkins (Program Coordinator), George Vuckotich (Faculty), Kathleen Iverson (Faculty), Michelle Fillichicha (Faculty), and Mark Durgee (student) in addition to leaders from ASTD. The session highlighted RU TRDV’s participation as the first university program in ASTD’s University Partnership Program.

When students graduate from Roosevelt University’s Training and Development (RU TRDV) masters degree programs they go out in the world and do some amazing things! We have alumni in various leadership roles in organizations where effective training and performance interventions bring some amazing results. We pride ourselves in helping our students create professional development plans that will continue to sharpen our alumni’s competencies long after they receive their diplomas.

So it should be no surprise that some of our graduates amass so much experience that they might someday consider sharing their knowledge with the next wave of students seeking the same success. Many of these professionals-turned-instructors will connect with students in an online learning environment. Online learning is not new. In fact most graduates of RU TRDV programs will have taken at least one class online by the time they graduate. Knowledge transfer techniques in an online environment are different than those found in a traditional face-to-face classroom.

It is in this light that RU TRDV has developed and rolled out a new post-graduate certificate plan called the Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching. This three-class program is designed to help seasoned professionals design and successfully instruct classes in an online environment. For details on classes, the application process, or relevance of the certificate program in the workplace click here or contact Tara Hawkins (thawkins@roosevelt.edu).

The Chicagoland Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (CCASTD) annually honors a student who has excelled at contributing to the local training and performance community. The award honors the late Deb Colky, former Director of the Roosevelt University Training and Development program.

We were proud when one of our students, Katie Kacich, was selected for the award last year. To read more about Katie and her reaction after being selected for the award read an article about it in our Spring 2010 newsletter. CCASTD is seeking applicants for the 2010 award and we invite as many students, from RU TRDV programs as well as other local programs, to apply! The deadline to apply is November 12, 2010. Applicants simply need to complete an application and ask a professor to submit a recommendation on their behalf.

To obtain an application or to get more information please email Melissa Pagonis at melissa.pagonis@gmail.com.

In honor of Deb Colky we would like to share with you a biography created by CCASTD leaders about her leadership and the impact she had on a generation of students and practitioners.

Dr. Deborah Colky

Dr. Deborah Colky’s biography is an impressive record of achievement. Deborah served as a Workplace Learning and Performance (WLP) professional for over 20 years, working in the not-for-profit and corporate sectors before co-founding Just Results, Inc. in 1990.

In 2001, she became the Director of Training and Development at Roosevelt University where she revised the curriculum to be cutting edge, making sure that it met the American Society of Training and Development industry standards. In addition to revising the curriculum, she added three online graduate certificates, increasing enrollment by 40%.

In 2004 and 2006, T+D magazine named Roosevelt’s Training and Development Program one of the top programs in the country.

Deb was awarded tenure and promotion (posthumously) in 2007, obtaining the rank of Associate Professor of Training and Development where she served as the Chair of the Graduate Program from 2001 to 2007.

Deborah’s commitment, passion, sense of humor and energy made her successful from serving as a volunteer member of a professional or community board to building Roosevelt University’s Training and Development program in both reputation and academic strength.

Deborah believed in lifelong learning and helped everyone to achieve their full potential, whether it was being one of her students, faculty members, business partner or husband.

She viewed education as a life-enriching experience in which she considered teaching to be a privilege. She believed that the WLP profession was a way to enhance the workplace and the world in which we live. Every day, she instilled in her students the enthusiasm for learning and inspired them to put into action what she taught.

Our students are encouraged to not only learn in class but find opportunities outside of class to sharpen their competencies. Many of you might already know that the Roosevelt University TRDV programs are all built to meet the established competencies developed by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). If you are interested in checking out these competencies for yourself click here.

In September we were proud to host a Chicagoland Chapter of ASTD (CCASTD) Student Interest Group event aimed at helping students develop a professional development plan using the ASTD WLP Competencies. Most of our students lead busy lives with their families, work, and class. We feel it is important to develop a professional development “road map” before attending networking events to ensure that attending them is a rewarding experience.

That said we want to let the RU TRDV community know about two fantastic upcoming events that will be held at Roosevelt’s Schaumburg Campus! Remember- you can use the free shuttle service from the CTA Blue Line if you live I the city and don’t want to drive!

October 21, 2010 CISPI Crackerbarrel Event

The Chicago Chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement (CISPI) is holding their annual crackerbarrel event in less than a week. We posted about this awesome event already on this blog so we aren’t going to write a huge amount of information today. Check out our earlier post about this event.

This is a great opportunity for our students to fulfill a “professional networking” requirement in their classes while getting a chance to meet “movers and shakers” in thew performance improvement field. According to the CISPI e-blast sent out yesterday, early bird pricing (only $15 for students) has been extended through October 17th!

For more details and to register for the CISPI event click here.

November 17, 2010 RU TRDV Best Practice Roundtable Event

Next week we will be posting all the details surrounding this event here on this blog. Our previous post detailing this event can be found here. Here is what we know so far:

1) We have confirmed four RU TRDV graduates who will answer any and all questions from participants about creating a successful professional development plan

2) We will discuss successful Human Performance Improvement techniques that participants can use at work that bring results

3) We are also going to help participants develop effective networking techniques they can use to land the job of their dreams

The Roosevelt University Training and Development Department was thrilled to host the 2009 Chicago Chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement (CISPI) last year at its Schaumburg campus and is excited to do it again this year! This is an amazing experience for students and alumni to network with local human performance improvement (HPI) professionals. Participants choose three out of a possible twelve topics to learn about in a “crackerbarrel” style event and get a chance to network during an icebreaker session, a light dinner, and breaks. Last year our students attended the event and enjoyed speakers that included the improv stylings of Second City! This year looks to be just as informative and fun.

The price is right too! Only $15 for students who register for the event before October 15th.

Many of our classes require students to attend a local professional development event. If your class requires such an adventure this term we suggest this event whole-heartedly. Not only will you learn a lot but you will meet some amazing people.

Visit the CISPI web site here for more information or to register.

Note: If you attend this year’s event and would like to share your experience think about writing a post for this blog! Contact Mark Durgee (mdurgee@roosevelt.edu) if you are interested.

Event Details:

When: Thursday, October 21, 2010 (5:30-9:00 PM)

Where: Roosevelt University’s Schaumburg Campus

Student Pricing: $15 before October 15, $25 after October 15

Register now for CISPI’s annual Crackerbarrel! Join colleagues in an evening of learning, fun, networking and good food! The hardest part? Selecting which three presentations to attend! A dozen gurus share their expertise and field your questions.

Just a few of the many presenters and topics:

Brigette Barrett-Johnson

Instructional Design Jeopardy

Join Bridgette for a fun and interactive look at various techniques for rapid eLearning deployment. Brigitte will show how the Nielsen Company has quickly designed, developed, and deployed e-learning to its global clients and employees. Brigitte will also lead discussions of other methods of delivering online learning that can be deployed rapidly and describe tools and tricks that can reduce the time needed for creating and delivering e-learning.

Kathleen Fortney

Herding Cats – Getting the Best Performance Out of Creative Teams

Are you a project manager leading a cross-functional team to create multimedia training solutions? Are you a performance consultant or instructional designer working with graphic designers and programmers to deliver value to your clients, but baffled about how to relate to your team? The presentation provides tips that will help you get your “cats” working together to accomplish the team’s objectives.

James Goldsmith

Reinventing the Virtual Classroom-10 Years Later

Jim will share data collected over 10 years, lessons learned, and plans for a more robust and varied virtual classroom experience that addresses business objectives and current employees’ needs. Examples cover learner engagement strategies, faculty interaction models, and delivery toolsets.

Deb Mansfield

Converting ILT courses to eLearning for a Global Audience

In this session, Deb shares her story about converting a stand-up course for IT employees to an eLearning course for remote contractors. The initiative included a tight deadline, cultural and technical issues, and an audience who either had or had not direct access to the organization’s system, in addition to making the course engaging and thought-provoking. Sound familiar? Hear how Deb and her team overcame the obstacles.

Brian Richardson

Web 2.0: A Community-based adoption approach

This session addresses Web 2.0 and 3.0 implementation and the advantages of a community-based approach to e-learning. Brian covers the types of virtual networks and the definition of a community practice, including characteristics, lifecycle, key deliverables, key roles, and adoption elements.
